About This Role: The Academic Advisor is responsible for providing individual advising to approximately 350 undergraduate students studying Human Development and Family Science. This position advises students concerning their academic plans, progress, and academic and career goals in order to assist the students in making personal education decisions and meeting graduation requirements. The advisor will be expected to interpret student needs and provides individualized service and assistance while maintaining confidentiality. The Academic Advisor will be expected to engage in professional development trainings, coordinate and oversee recruitment plans, and meet with prospective students.

The Academic Advisor should be familiar with other majors (Communication Sciences and Disorders, Early Childhood Education, and Personal Financial Planning), minors (Conflict Analysis and Trauma Studies, Financial Counseling, and Financial Planning), certificates (Conflict Resolution, Kansas Insurance), and graduate programs (Applied Family Science, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Couple and Family Therapy, Family and Community Services, Lifespan Human Development, Personal Financial Planning and Youth Development) within the School of Family Studies and Human Services. The Academic Advisor will be expected to provide advising support to students interested in the minor and certificate programs within the School of Family Studies and Human Services.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide academic advising to all undergraduate students (on-campus and distance) pursuing the Human Development and Family Science major
  • Provide academic advising support to students pursuing a minor or certificate within the School of Family Studies and Human Services
  • Provide career counseling and relevant professional exam information to students
  • Provide Early Alert support for students struggling in classes
  • Prepare letters of reference for graduate and/or professional school applications.
  • Explore and market options for create Study Abroad/Shadow Abroad/ and US Educational Tour opportunities
  • Be an active member of the recruitment plan for Human Development and Family Science in collaboration with the School of Family Studies and Human Services and the College of Health and Human Sciences
  • Be engaged in prospective student visits
  • Be available for advising during orientation and enrollment sessions
  • Participate in HDFS Undergraduate Committee meetings and select initiatives.
  • Track recruitment of prospective students and major-changers, as well as retention of current students to determine best methods of recruiting and retaining students
  • Assist with strategic development initiatives within the School of Family Studies and Human Development and Family Science Unit.

What You’ll Need to Succeed: Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s of Science in Family Studies and Human Services or closely related field
  • One year of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in academic advising or closely related field
  • Familiarity with Kansas State University
  • Possess extensive knowledge about university academic programs, policies, procedures and student support services
  • Demonstrated competence in online advising and enrollment systems
  • Knowledge of Extension
  • English and Spanish-speaking
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in working with diverse people in a variety of situations
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to meet deadlines, be detail-oriented and prioritize tasks
  • Adherence to strict confidentiality and other ethical standards
  • Strong computer skills
